Bill Gates Biography Bill Gates of Microsoft can be credited as one of the most influential people in our culture's recent history. Computers are everywhere today: many people use them at work, at home, and our cell phones are becoming more like computers every day. As the founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates has found his way into the classrooms, home, and businesses across the country and beyond. Although Gates and Microsoft are not necessarily responsible for many advances in computer technology, many people consider him to be one of the founders of the modern "Information Age." His position as a software architect and his book Business at the Speed of Thought helped pave the way for technology to solve business and educational problems is ways tha

The Time magazine article of March 1923 is significant in a number of ways, as it addresses conflicting cultural sentiments about the role of African-American female caregivers and slavery in general. The first paragraph of the article describes how two thousand African American women protested the erection of a memorial commemorating the "Black Mammy of the South." The article states that the women protested in "dignified and quiet language." Significantly, the women took issue with the erection of the statue, as it was a "reminder that [they] come from a race of slaves." In the second paragraph of the article, the tone shifts, as the author suggests that the initiators of the memorial will be offended by the "educated granddaughters'" unwillingness to accept this memorial. It becomes obvious from the author's choice of words that he/she disapproves of the protest. The second paragraph does not just emphasize that the "sentimentalists" intended to honor the "black mammy" bu

Studies have shown that greater usage of the internet is associated with declines in family member communication, declines in social circle size, and increases in depression and loneliness (Kraut et al., 1998; van den Eijnden, Meerkerk, Vermulst, Spijkerman, & Engels, 2008). Over the next ten years an increasing reliance on technology may lead to alienation, as individuals are less likely to understand or influence the events upon which their life happiness depends. Sociologists will increasingly use the internet to

Caudillos, political-military leaders, had a tremendous influence on Latin American history (Luhnow, 2005). During the early 19th century, the cultural phenomenon of the caudillismo appeared in societies undergoing revolution. The origin of caudillismo is a colonial policy of the Spanish regarding the supplementation of small cadres of soldiers with militia who were recruited from the local populace (Narrett, 2002). These forces were recruited to maintain public order. Many of these militiamen still held

Family Therapy- Jeff and Roger One of the most important steps in family therapy is to assess family history and to pinpoint why the family is seeking help in the first place. Families rarely enter therapy and already know what causes the problems within their family system. Sometimes patients may be agitated or emotional when entering the first therapy session and need to be given time to talk and express their feelings. However, the therapist should choose a comprehensive method to systematically assess family history, as this step ensures that the succeeding therapy sessions can be productive. The choice of tool depends on personal preference as well as ideological background of the therapist. First, the therapist would have to determine who should be considered as belonging to the family. In the case study under consideration, the immediate family consists of Jeff and Roger. However, Roger's mother and grandmother, as well as Sherry should be included in the a

Statement of Problem Autism diagnosis is based on impairments or deficits in three areas: social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication, and repetitive, restricted and stereotyped behavioral patterns (American Psychiatric Association, 2000). Individuals with autism share common characteristics but vary substantially in severity and combination, which is why autism is considered a spectrum disorder (ASD). Asperger disorder (AD) and Asperger syndrome (AS) are spectrum disorders that are characterized by similar behaviors as those present in autism. For those with the disorder or syndrome, impairments in social interaction exist. Restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior and/or interest are present in this population. The reported rate of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has significantly increased since the 1980s (Tincani, Travers, & Boutot, 2009). However with AD clinically significant delays in language development, adaptive behavior, and cognitive functioning are

1. The three major interpretations of language development in children are the nativist interpretation, the behaviorist interpretation and the social interactionist interpretation. These three perspectives are related to the nature versus nurture debate. Some theorists believe that language acquisition occurs as a result of maturation in the brain's structure. This is the "nature" view. Other theorists believe that language development occurs as a result of children learning from their parents and other people in their environments. This is the "nurture" view. The nativist interpretation is based on the idea that nature plays a stronger role than nurture. Nativists argue that "the mind must have some preexisting structure in order to organize and interpret expe

Multinational Corporations and Cultural Barriers Wal-Mart, a multinational corporation, is familiar to most Americans since 90% of them shop there each year. What the shopper probably knows about Wal-Mart is that's where prices are about as low as they get, so one can find a good deal on a wide selection of products. One also probably knows that there are a lot of Wal-Marts around. Fewer people, perhaps, are aware that Wal-Mart is facing huge problems on multiple fronts due to the cultural barriers it presents, if it ever intends to expand its overseas operations. These problems include how it manages its human resources, in particular its female employees. Currently there are one million women trying to form a class action suit against this corporation. The Supreme Court of the U.S. has only now become involved in this. The result is not yet in. The case involves sexual discrimination and whether this huge giant of a corporation is allowed to discriminate against women. T

Panhandler for a Day Allen Carswell sat back in his plush smoking chair and puffed lazily on his imported cigar. As a successful mystery novelist, he had long since forgotten his difficult childhood in a local orphanage. He had been found in a basket on the orphanage doorstep when only a few days old, and years of growing up in its grim surroundings had convinced him that he wanted no part of a life of poverty. He had honed his writing skills and had become an immediate success with the publication of his first novel, The Death Trap. Now, almost 40 years later, his life of luxury provided a comfortable buffer against his memories of the past when he had to scrap for every crust of bread, often going to bed hungry. "Will there be anything els

This paper will be concerned with the concept known as "framing the news." Journalists use various techniques to frame their news stories. They tend to emphasize certain facts, thereby making those facts seem more important than others. Journalists also tend to omit certain elements of the overall story. By framing their stories in these ways, journalists create specific definitions of the issues being covered. These definitions have an impact on how audiences interpret the news. Some people see framing as problematic when it is biased and is used to influence the opinions of the audience. Most news stories are based on a particular view of the world, which is generally either conservative or liberal in nature. This idea will be illustrated by referring to the coverage of the 2011 budget deal in Congress in the Wall Street Journal (a conservative news source) and the New York Times (a more liberal news source). However, it will also be argued that readers are not necessarily forced to

Monkey: Evolution of the Title Character In Wu Cheng'en's tale "Monkey," the title character, Monkey, evolves throughout the course of the story from being independent and self absorbed to becoming one who recognizes the value in others and learns that working together with them can help them all achieve their goals. In the beginning of the story, Monkey's primary concern is to become immortal so that he does not have to face death. His focus is on what he himself can accomplish. Moreover, he sees no need for others, and there is no one but himself in his vision of the future. However, one day he hears someone singing, "Those I meet upon my way/Are Immortals, one and all," and assumes that the person is an Immortal (Cheng'en 16). He finds that the man is only a lowly woodcutter who had lea
