2. Myers' argument in Chapter 3 is that happiness is relative, that "Happiness depends less on having things than on our attitude toward the things we have" (62). If one has a Volkswagen and is happy, that one is far better off than one who has a BMW and longs for a Mercedes. If one is not affected by what the "Joneses" have, that one will be much happier with whatever he has than will another person whose happiness is based on staying ahead of those same Joneses. Again, the Christian perspective is that material goods will not bring happiness, but only the sense that God is in ultimate control of life and death, and the individual is free to be loving to his neighbors. The selfishness of material acquisition is in opposition to these Christian principles and will only bring dissatisfaction.
