Comparison of 2 Films
This is an excerpt from the paper...
Films in general are difficult to get into production, difficult to produce, and difficult to sell once they are completed. Some films are more problematic than others because they go against the grain of what is usually sold in the marketplace, and such films require special handling. Two recent films show the way filmmakers address these issues. The films are very different in tone and style, but each has tried to create something saleable by the use or inclusion of certain elements that may make this more possible, Tin Cup is a big-budget romantic comedy set in the world of golf, and Fly Away Home is a film geared more to children that makes use of creative camerawork and minimal but effective special effects to tell a fantasy story in an interesting manner. Tin Cup has three major stars and so would fit more with the way films are created around personalities with an appeal in the marketplace, but the film has some elements that would be of concern just the same. It was directed by Ron Shelton, who had also been successful with the earlier films Bull Durham and White Men Can't Jump. He had thus shown himself to be adept with sports related material, and this would certainly have been a plus when he wanted to do this story. Sports-themed films are often seen as a problem by studios because of past experience. It is one thing to want to do a film about baseball or football because of the popularity of these as spectator sports. It is another to make a film about

he character rather than because of any inherent drama in the play itself. Shelton also compresses issues and makes the play more exciting by using montages of different drives and putts to speed up the action and to make it seem more as if a lot is happening in a relatively short period of time.
Shelton has also worked to get everything right so that those who do play golf will not have any criticism of the film. This may mean little to those who do not play the game, but in fact the truth embodied in the film should affect every viewer. Such things are intangible, but the audience often knows when something is false even if it does not know why. What is important is that the viewer believe that the type of people seen in the film are the type of people one would encounter in a real golf tournament and that the sorts of problems faced by Costner would also ring true in the real world.
Reality has to be maintained even in the fantasy world of Fly Away Home, and indeed a sense of reality is always essential to making a fantasy believable. This film was directed by Carroll Ballard, a man who has had successes with other films involving both children and animals, both of which are featured in this film. He directed The Blac
