Comparison of 2 Films

Films in general are difficult to get into production, difficult to produce, and difficult to sell once they are completed. Some films are more problematic than others because they go against the grain of what is usually sold in the marketplace, and such films require special handling. Two recent films show the way filmmakers address these issues. The films are very different in tone and style, but each has tried to create something saleable by the use or inclusion of certain elements that may make this more possible, Tin Cup is a big-budget romantic comedy set in the world of golf, and Fly Away Home is a film geared more to children that makes use of creative camerawork and minimal but effective special effects to tell a fantasy story in an interesting manner.

Tin Cup has three major stars and so would fit more with the way films are created around personalities with an appeal in the marketplace, but the film has some elements that would be of concern just the same. It was directed by Ron Shelton, who had also been successful with the earlier films Bull Durham and White Men Can't Jump. He had thus shown himself to be adept with sports related material, and this would certainly have been a plus when he wanted to do this story. Sports-themed films are often seen as a problem by studios because of past experience. It is one thing to want to do a film about baseball or football because of the popularity of these as spectator sports. It is another to make a film about sports like tennis, bowling, or golf, for while they have some appeal to spectators, they are of greater appeal to a select group that participates in the sport. There is a story about golf in particular that is remembered by studio heads.
