The camera is a technological device, a machine. In our industrialized societies machines are associated with scientific endeavors, which are seen as objective and rational. A drawing or a painting is an artistic endeavor by a human being, and is thus subjective and less rational (Beloff, 1985). People tend to ignore the fact that there was someone manipulating the camera who decided what to put into the frame and when to make the exposure. "Ostensibly recording, diagnostic, reporting, photographers have always known that while they were nothing, they were also everything" (Beloff, 1985). A photographer brings to the photograph all of his or her biases, opinions, and knowledge of the subject, and these have a great effect on the final outcome of the photograph.
