In Afghanistan a bloody war has been going on for seventeen years. The sides in the war have changed several times and since 1992 the war has been about the question of what makes a true Islamic nation. Recently the fundamentalist Taliban forces have taken over Kabul, the country's capital, and imposed a very strict interpretation of Sharia, Islamic law. But the former government's forces, led by Ahmad Shah Masoud, have "mounted a successful counterattack" and the Taliban's position is more insecure. In addition, the third major power, the forces of the Uzbek chief Abdul Rashid Dostam, have started to assist Masoud against the Taliban. There is still a strong possibility that either of these groups could keep the Taliban from final victory for many years. But the Taliban victory also might not be permanent since many Afghans are opposed to such a strict interpretation of the law, even though they believe firmly in a more moderate version of Sharia.
