Filmmakers Intent in "Genocide"

The primary focus of the film Genocide is on man's capacity for inhumanity to others, something that has occurred throughout history but that was especially virulent during the era of Nazi rule in Germany in the first half of this century. The primary concern in this film is on the horrors of genocide and on the emotions it raises in those who have been subjected to it, as were the Jews in Germany in the 1930s and 1940s. The mood of the film is angry, not merely at those who committed these atrocities throughout history, but at those who at the time refused to belief anyone capable of such horrors or who refused to become involved because of political concerns of their own and who thus allowed it to happen.

Genocide is the attempt to wipe out a people, whether those of a particular nationality, race, or religious belief. One step toward genocide is the demonization of a people, as was done by Germany in the early 1930s as all of the ills of the nation were said to be the fault of Jews in some international conspiracy. Such demonization allows for the growth of hatred and makes it possible for people to fight back against their supposed enemies and destroy them.

The idea underlying this film is that genocide can occur at any time, that a people can become the target of hatred by a group and can be subjected to extermination of the groups that hates them is in power.
