LEADERSHIP IN EDUCATION The School Principal as Leader

The school principle is a administrator and leader in the field of education. A principle has the responsibility to implement policies, inform students and faculty, communicate, and manage situations. The principle in question was involved in a situation which required leadership abilities to resolve. He was responsible for the management and implementation of school procedures and policy regarding multiple absences; ten absences and a student flunked the class and if a Senior, they do not graduate. This responsibility included executing school policy, reinforcing faculty positions, and informing the student and his parents, of the required action of failing the student; carrying through with this action was needed to ensure proper guidance for all students.

Although attempts were made to resolve the situation, nothing happened. This principle demonstrated very little leadership ability. It seems that his intent was ethically correct and conscientious, however, his style of leadership did not manage to conclude the predicament. His leadership style appears to include aspects of moral leadership. He was aware of the difference between right and wrong; he was aware that a student had exceeded the number of absences allowed for the passing of a class. He knew that the right thing to do would be to take action regarding this matter. He made a good ethical decision regarding efforts to resolve the situation by asking the teacher to present written recommendations to be considered. He also appeared to demonstrate an understanding of human weaknesses and tendency to forgive moral lapses, by asking that the teacher work with the student to increase his grade to passing.

As a transactional leader, this principle demonstrated very few attributes. He did however attempt to conform to the norm, find ways to innovate, reduce uncertainty, and define the situation. He also appeared to try and change people's
