The problem of young people having access to pornographic images on the Internet has been much discussed in recent months. The scale of the problem has likely been exaggerated, but it is a problem just the same. It has been noted that it is nearly impossible to police the Internet given the nature of the system, for the Internet is not a single place but is rather a collection of millions of sites, providers, and connections enabling an individual to access information from a distance and to do so anonymously to a great extent. This creates a problem when parents are concerned about what their children may be doing on the Internet because there is no way simply to pass a law that no site deemed adult can allow access by anyone under age, since there is no way of determining age online. A technological or mechanical solution is the only possibility, allowing parents to place a block on the computer at their end and so to eliminate the possibility that their children will be able to access material the parents do not want them to see.
