Machiavelli writes on three of the ways a political leader can obtain power: prowess, fortune and crime. People imitate great people and try to imitate their virtue. The chances of a Prince controlling a state increase when his prowess is greater. With great prowess, things will run smoother; the Prince will be able to gather an army and get things done more effectively. This is very clear and concise, and it is this ability that spurs very capable people to become Princes. "Machiavelli believed less capable people could still become leaders through fortune, or a lucky combination of circumstances."
