The Necessity of Reducing Legal Immigration

Thesis Statement: The environmental, socio-economic, and infrastructure costs of legal immigration to the United States are too high and legal immigration must be reduced to no more than 10 percent of current levels.

I Introduction. High costs necessitate reduction in legal immigration (currently at approximately 1 million per year) and such reductions will result in improvement of conditions for new immigrants and American poor and middle class.

II Traditional arguments in favor of high levels of immigration.

A. Equality of opportunity for all.

B. Refuge from political and economic oppression.

C. Illegal immigration will increase.

III Environmental Costs: Rapid population growth, at current rates of legal immigration, will result in serious shortages of resources and irreversible damage to environment within 50 years.

A. Population growth, currently at zero, will, within 50

years, reach extremely high levels.

B. The more Americans there are (i.e., the more new

immigrants arrive) the greater the use of resources since Americans consume far more than other peoples.

IV Socio-economic Costs: American business interests desire cheap labor and encourage high levels of legal immigration. This is costing jobs and lowering standard of living for American workers.

A. American workers compete for jobs with 500,000 new

immigrants per year and this lowers wages and restricts

B. The high levels of legal immigration create a hostile

environment for new immigrants.

1. They cannot find employment other than the most

menial and undesirable jobs which may set them off

2. They are resented by American workers and suffer prejudicial treatment in employment, housing, and

many other areas of opportunity.
