PERSONAL REACTIONS TO GROUP THERAPY

This is an excerpt from the paper...

My primary reaction to Yalom's (1995) explication of group therapy is one of skeptical admiration. I admire the meticulous detail in which he considers this form of intervention as well as the comprehensiveness of the discussion. For example, he describes and discusses a wide variety of group therapy, components and procedures such as: the diverse therapeutic tasks required, the dynamics and group processes that are typical at the beginning, middle, and end of therapy; the special strategies and procedural aids that can be used; and so forth.

However, I am also very skeptical of the degree to which group therapy can actually achieve strong and positive psychotherapeutic change. Yalom's (1995) claims of the effectiveness of this therapeutic form are primarily based on his and/or other therapists success reports, not well-controlled experimental research. And, frankly, based on my personal experiences with group therapy, I would have to see a great deal of well-controlled research before I would consider placing confidence in the claims made by advocates of this form of intervention.
