Teaching from the Heart
This is an excerpt from the paper...
Mary Elizabeth Mullino Moore has searched her own heart and her desire to educate within the religious context in order to create her text Teaching from the Heart (Minneapolis: Fortress Press, 1991). The result is a compelling examination of five distinctive teaching methods in the light of the process theological perspective (principally that of Alfred North Whitehead): case study, gestalt, phenomenological, narrative, and conscientizing. Mullino Moore succeeds in challenging the religious educator (if not all educators) to comprehend his or her own style of teaching and to reflect on the potential of each of the other methods to work in conjunction with the familiar, or as a more effective replacement. Mullino Moore's "passion" is for a synthesis of theology and education (or, educational method), for the two to re-form one another in a way which permits a fuller revelation of God and His purposes for humanity. Her underlying premise is that by totally connecting humans with all of God's created order, in opposition to traditional theological inclinations which may only serve to connect men, women, and children to the Godhead, we can achieve a higher plane of spirituality and understanding. Because the Bible is so wonderfully narrative, the use of narrative method (as opposed to strictly exegetical) for theological instruction should prove more fruitful.
Lastly, conscientization seeks to liberate one from "racial and economic injustice, religious intolerance, and oppression of the powerful over the powerless" (163). A conscientizing ministry of theology and education seeks to make a difference in the way in which we live our lives--allowing us to live more fully, and to desire fuller lives for others with whom we come in contact or learn about. It seeks to force us to admit those things which we have otherwise denied, and in this respect, should be seen as a powerful evangelistic method.
Mullino Moore's work has much to offer to the theological and religious education communities. Foremost is the recognition that human life and ac
