Dada was a movement that was closely allied to other movements, being itself a form of Expressionism and producing as it did Surrealism. Dada was a nihilistic movement seeking the cessation of all rules, leading to total freedom, separate from all traditions. A movement can thus be anti- more than pro- some idea or technique. Dada would have a strong effect on subsequent movements and on a number of poets not specifically associated with this movement, such as T.S. Eliot and Ezra Pound.

Surrealism is a movement in literature and in the arts which began with a manifesto. The movement originated in France in the 1920s:
