The main concepts behind Covey's first habit of effectiveness are that: people are responsible for their own emotional lives, people are free to choose their own courses of action, and nobody can force anyone into circumstances which they really do not wish to be a part of. Therefore, Covey correctly believes that, once a person takes responsibility for his or her own circumstances and is ready to engage in proactive conduct to better those circumstances, a person is on the right road to leading a happier and more effective life.

The second habit of effectiveness which Covey's book discusses is labeled "beginning with the end in mind." Covey explains that beginning with the end in mind is one of the most important principles of personal leadership. By "beginning with the end in mind," Covey means that people should "make certain that whatever [a person does] on any particular day" of his or her life should contribute "in a meaningful way to the vision [a person has of his or her] life as a whole" (98). According to Covey, "all things are created twice:" first in a person's mind, and then physically or actually (90). Thus, Covey believes that people should begin each day by imagining or picturing how they want things to be in their lives.
