SELF-OBSERVATION

The purpose of this self-observation study was to monitor the target behavior, exercise, and determine what factors or learning principles might be involved and utilized to increase this behavior.

The principles of operant conditioning are applied to the process of learning to increase exercise behavior. Operant conditioning is also called instrumental conditioning. This type of behavioral learning differs from classical conditioning in that it involves the organism's response to operate or produce effects. These effects then influence whether the response will occur again. Responses in operant conditioning are considered to be complex rather than reflexive and involve the entire organism (Tavris & Wade, 1997).

The maintenance of a behavior in operant terms involves positive and negative reinforcers. Positive reinforcers include something pleasant that follows the response and negative reinforcers involve the removal of something unpleasant following the response. The principle of immediate consequence refers to the strength of a reinforcer; the sooner a reinforcer, the greater its effect. Continuous reinforcement is the reinforcement of a response each time it occurs; learning is most rapid with this schedule (Tavris & Wade, 1997).
