Branches of Associationism
This is an excerpt from the paper...
1. The two major branches of associationism are Philosophical Associationism and Psychological Associationism. Both place an emphasis on the association if ideas, on the combination of ideas. Philosophical Associationism is represented in the writings of David Hume, who sees association as a "gentle force" on the mind, a force that can be overridden. Psychological Associationism is represented in the writings of William James. James emphasizes that Philosophical Associationism tries to explain the sequencing of thought in terms of principles of reason, and he is suspicious of this. He seeks an explanation of the association of thought that explains the mechanical conditions on which thought depends.2. William James first of all divides thought into spontaneous thought and voluntary thought. He addresses voluntary thought first in terms of "recalling a thing forgotten" and second in terms of problem solving. Recalling a thing forgotten begins with the realization that something is absent, and this is followed by trying to remember. The act of recalling is clearly a voluntary act as the individual seeks details in his or her mind and finds associations of ideas leading to getting warmer leading to remembering. The associations arise spontaneously, and the will emphasizes or lingers over those which seem pertinent while ignoring the rest. He suggests that links of association will gradually focus on the item to be remembers and bring it into the consciousness.
