Robin and Foster (1989) suggest that individual therapy is one of the most successful ways of treating adolescent alcohol abuse. Under this approach, parents attend therapy sessions with their child in order to effectively identify the behavior that causes the problem in the first place. Mitic (1987) suggested that the stress related behaviors that contribute to adolescent alcohol abuse can only be successfully treated under an integrated family-therapy situation. Besides medical and individualized alcohol treatment programs, an effective counseling approach would consider the need based behavior within the contextual framework of the particular niche in which the adolescent is present. In effect, this paradigm of approach centers the perceived difficulties to a manageable level and provides additional impetus for chances of success (Johnson, 1988).

Drug abuse is an even more serious variant of substance abuse. Within the school system, educators continually preach that drugs are not the answer, yet the incidence of drug abuse among adolescents is on the rise (Marks, 1989).

Traditionally, most approaches to the drug problem have though of drug education as being simply information acquisition. In other words, the school system provides the information through the teacher that drug and alcohol use is not only dangerous, but legally and socially unacceptable behavior. That this approach has been relatively ineffective is hardly debatable. Not only do students not take the teachers seriously, they often do the exact opposite of what was suggested to them at school, thus asserting their "wisdom" and independent nature.
