of being treated unfairly by all media, but business knows the power of the media and uses it to its own advantage through advertising. In fact, once an environmental story becomes fodder for the media, there may be a media war of opposing forces trying to get the story told in their particular way. What is clear is that repeated media attention to a problem creates a desire for change on the part of the public which then leads to pressure on government to take action. 5.3 Public As seen in the previous section, the media has played an important role in heightening the awareness of the public on issues of environmental importance as it relates to business. The public has become very concerned about such issues, which after all may endanger public health and the environment, jeopardizing the future livelihood of coming generations. The public has a special importance in Western democratic societies such as that of Canada. In constitutional terms, the government is an instrument of the public, and governmental actions are influenced and determined by public opinion and public action.
