IQ

Just a brief note to let you know that I'm thinking about you--and to tell you as strongly as I can: DON'T WORRY. In fact, there's absolutely nothing to worry about.

Many people have been in your shoes before. I realize that whenever we take tests of any kind we want to do well, and if we're used to acing exams, as you certainly are, we tend to set extra-high standards for ourselves and be our own harshest critic. So what seems like a score that's too low can get to us. What you may not know, though, is that the measurement of your IQ doesn't have anything--not anything--to do with your performance as a student. It has nothing whatsoever to do with the grades you get in school. Because it's totally confidential, it's not going to be stamped on your transcript or be reported to the college boards.

By the way, did you know there's a lot of disagreement about IQ tests in general? Some experts say the IQ number may not even have all that much to do with intelligence (Gould, 1981; Siegel, 1999). That's because a lot of things affect how we perform on a standardized test of any kind: how we feel physically or psychologically that day, whether we have a reading disability like dyslexia or can't hear all that well--even how tired we may be from studying the previous night.

What counts for you as a student--and what results in good grades--are how hard you work on your studies and how seriously you take your education. As you've probably figured out all on your own, how good your teachers are also counts for a lot. An IQ test--any standardized test--is only a very tiny part of your experience in school, one part of one day out of several thousand by the time you graduate.
