The choice of communication media has a profound effect on group interaction. The media used for the group I was involved in incuded telephone conversations, voice mail, teleconferencing, fax, and e-mail. The group participants found that high technology modes of communication were not always the best solution for our needs. In any group interaction, team productivity is the desired objective. A group that is not productive wastes time. Our group found that telephone conversations were the most efficient way to ensure the transfer of most types of information. For example, at one point it was necessary to schedule an emergency meeting; the most efficient way of doing so was the telephone. Although all the group members were not at home at the time I called I was able to leave messages on voice mail. One of our team members even had a beeper, and after paging the number, I was able to get an immediate response. It would have been impossible to get all the group members together on such short notice using faxes or e-mail.
