Nursing Associations

This is an excerpt from the paper...

There are many different nursing associations now

representing different nursing specialties as nursing is becoming more specialized. There are standards of practice for office nursing, nurse anesthetists, holistic nursing, advanced practice nursing, pediatric nursing, and countless other specialties. The Board of Nursing has established Standards of Practice for Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses to specify minimum practice standards for which RNs and LPNs are responsible, and to clarify the scope of their practice (Standards, 2001). The purpose of standards is to ensure that the public, government, and other stakeholders can be confident that a profession is dedicated to maintaining public trust and upholding the criteria of its professional practice (Standards, 2004). The standards of practice are based on the values of the profession. Standards allow nurses to provide safe, competent, and ethical professional care for their patients. Standards offer explicit and well-defined enumeration of the responsibilities for which nurses are held accountable, and provide direction for professional practice (AAON, 2004).

Seniors are more active and less sedentary than ever before, they are getting more preventive medicine (vaccinations and mammograms are up). The impact on the healthcare system will be in changes in the way it is used rather than increases in usage. The emphasis will be on services which keep the elderly in their own homes, and independent for a longer period than in the past. 3. Delirium involves a depressed level of awareness and a confused state (Martin and Haynes, 2000). It is a disturbance of consciousness accompanied by a change in cognition that cannot be accounted for by dementia. It has a sudden, short onset, and symptoms include perceptual disturbances; incoherent speech; a disturbed sleep/wake cycle; changes in psychomotor activity; memory impairment (especially recent memory); disorientation; a decreased level of consciousness; and evidence of a potential organic cause.
