Nursing Associations

There are many different nursing associations now

representing different nursing specialties as nursing is becoming more specialized. There are standards of practice for office nursing, nurse anesthetists, holistic nursing, advanced practice nursing, pediatric nursing, and countless other specialties. The Board of Nursing has established Standards of Practice for Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses to specify minimum practice standards for which RNs and LPNs are responsible, and to clarify the scope of their practice (Standards, 2001). The purpose of standards is to ensure that the public, government, and other stakeholders can be confident that a profession is dedicated to maintaining public trust and upholding the criteria of its professional practice (Standards, 2004). The standards of practice are based on the values of the profession. Standards allow nurses to provide safe, competent, and ethical professional care for their patients. Standards offer explicit and well-defined enumeration of the responsibilities for which nurses are held accountable, and provide direction for professional practice (AAON, 2004).

1. Maslow's theory of motivation and human needs applies in

this case because this man is used to being very independent and highly successful. Now he is he is vulnerable, his level 1 survival skills have failed, and he has not been able to take care of his basic survival needs physically (Maslow's, 2004). On Level 2, his world is no longer predictable and organized, and he is no longer safe from physical and psychological harm. At Level 3, he can no longer contribute to society at the moment and therefore is not able to validate himself. He is in a strange place, among strangers and does not feel he belongs.
