One fact about the female-dominated nursing profession is that it has been regarded principally and programmatically as a support mechanism for health-care delivery by those who are health-care professionals, i.e., doctors. Throughout the contemporary literature is reflected a presumption that nurses should perform with friendliness, expertise, and compassion according to the expectations of doctors, patients, and family (Czerwiec, 1996). As a group nurses have more responsibility than authority over health-care protocols (Cullen, 1995). For that reason, Cullen (1995) asserts that the demands of shifting health-care administrative factors, institutional, societal, and nursing systems together and separately "fail" nurses, and by extension patients, to the degree they require much of nurses but deliver little to them. RNs whose career motives are associated in popular imagination and their professional literature with "dedication and desire to provide quality care" (Cullen, 1995, p. 23), appear to resent the offhand manner in which their work is devalued.
