Short-term Study Abroad

This is an excerpt from the paper...

In recent years, short-term study abroad programs targeted at elementary and secondary school students have become increasingly popular. Although no statistics have been gathered on this specific population, Hudzik and Larsen have noted the trends of "junior high and high school language teachers, social studies teachers, athletic coaches and band directors accompanying students to study abroad" (6). Some of these programs for young students are also organized by youth exchange organizations such as Children's International Summer Villages that provide 11-year-olds with the opportunity to immerse in another culture for one month (Hudzik and Larson 6).

Realizing the relevance of their classroom learning to their field trips, students often become motivated to learn and develop a renewed interest in their study in specific areas. Their critical thinking skills will also be enhanced due to the changes in their perspectives (Hovde 13). For older students, especially those in the secondary schools (eighth and ninth graders), they are likely to derive additional advantages from their exposure to another culture. To begin with, these students will acquire a global point of view with regard to many issues. These students will demonstrate this change in their interest in global issues and the ability to discuss these issues constructively. They will recognize that many of their previous concepti
