1. In England, unification resulted from a desire among the rulers as well as the people of England and Scotland to unite in the 1500s as a Protestant nation. In the case of France, unification occurred in the 1400s as a result of a marriage between the heirs to two principalities. In Germany, unification did not occur until the late 1800s. The German princes refused to surrender their sovereignty until they were presented with a common problem and a leader, Kaiser Wilhelm, capable of leading them to victory.2. Feudalism involved a symbiotic relationship in which the nobles provided their serfs with protection, and in turn the serfs provided the labor required to sustain an agrarian society. To the extent that being a member of the nobility was a right of birth rather than based on demonstrated ability, feudalism promoted a caste system that was not dependent on ability. 3. The Mayan civilization is considered to have been one of the greatest civilizations in history based on the Mayan's artistic and architectural achievements as well as their complex but fully functional political order and social order. 4. There are interesting comparisons that can be made between the Roman Empire and the Mayan Empire although these civilizations probably had more than was not common than they had in common. 9. Islamic law regulates all aspects of a slave's status. Islamic law determines the relations between owner and slave. Islamic law praises manumission, the formal act of freeing from slavery, but does not require it. During the early period of Islam in the Ottoman Empire, most slaves were prisoners of war. When the frontiers stabilized, many captives were ransomed. Since Islamic law forbad the enslavement of free-born Muslims, and since the various mechanisms of manumission and the absence of slave-breeding practices limited the ability of the slave population to reproduce, slaves had to be recruited from outside the Islamic world. At the time, the Ottoman Empire was the only nation on earth where slaves had rights guaranteed by the state.
10. If I had to summarize why the Safavid Empire was important in world history, I would state that it was their ability to unify Persia. Even though Safavids were Turkish, the adopted the Persian language and unified Iran as an Islamic theocracy with the shah as the head of government.
