Mental Health Services

In this paper, Health Care Associates, Incorporated (HCA) that specializes in providing mental health, as well as family/youth crisis intervention services, will be assessed. More specifically, HCA's macro structure and its environment will be evaluated in order to explore its effectiveness in providing services to its client population. Sources that were used for the assessment of HCA included: agency materials, interviews with the staff and the Internet.

Established on August 1, 2001 by Mark Nwalozie, HCA was created to cater to the wide-ranging needs of individuals with mental health problems, along with their families, in the catchment areas of Baltimore County, Baltimore City and nearby counties. According to Nwalozie, HCA provide an invaluable support system for outpatients who need continued care and treatment upon their return to the community. In addition, HCA also offers an alternative to individuals with mental health problems who had not been successful in inpatient settings. Due to the dire need of affordable mental health services for these individuals within the community and the absence of adequate governmental services, HCA was thus formed to address the needs of these individuals who represent the socially and political disenfranchised in the community (M. Nwalozie, personal communication, November 2, 2004).

Specifically, as stated in the agency's written mission statement, the mission of HCA is to "create, maintain, monitor a full continuum of Mental Health services for Mentally Ill persons and their families" (HCA, n. d., "Mission"). In addition, HCA is dedicated to the two interrelated goals of enabling clients to become independent and compliant with their treatment regimens, while ensuring the overall well-being of the public (HCA, n. d., "Mission).
