Alternative Energy Sources

This is an excerpt from the paper...

This study addressed the following question: Which of the several alternative energy sources to fossil fuels, either singly or in combination, should provide the focus for a federal alternative energy research and development program in the United States in the early1990s, the purpose of which would be to create national energy independence by the early years of the twentyfirst century? It was found that biomass energy rated even higher than fossil fuels (considered as a group) in an overall context, considering development costs, use costs, environmental impact, level of supply, and timeliness. Following fossil fuels in third place was nuclear energy. Both biomass energy and nuclear energy are capable of providing for the longterm energy needs of the nation; however, the longterm environmental impact of nuclear energy remains questionable because of the accident potential, and because of uncertainties surrounding the issue of waste disposal. It was concluded that biomass energy offers the best longterm prospects for a single energy source to provide for the bulk of the nation's energy needs. It was also concluded that nuclear energy could play a meaningful role in the nation's energy future, if accident and waste disposal concerns can be effectively addressed. It was recommended that, as a part of a national energy policy, development of largescale biomass energy production be initiated by 1994. It is further recommended that research be accelera

r in combination, should provide the focus for a federal alternative energy research and development program in the United States in the early1990s, the purpose of which would be to create national energy independence by the early years of the twentyfirst century? Statement of the Purpose In early1991, there were several potentially viable alternative energy sources to fossil fuels. These potential energy alternatives included (1) biomass energy (Society for the Advancement of Education, 1990), (2) geothermal energy (Dreyfus and Ashby, 1990), (3) hydroelectric power (Boyle, 1990), (4) nuclear power (Miller and Mintzer, 1990), (5) solar energy (American Academy for the Advancement of Science, 1990), and (6) wind power (Scientific American, 1990). Unfortunately, each of the potential alternative energy sources had both serious drawbacks, as well as significant advantages. Neither the choice between these alternative energy sources, nor the selection of a package of these alternative presented itself an easy task. The purpose of this study was to develop information which could facilitate either the making of a choice between the several alternative energy sources, or the selection of a package of these alternative e
