College & University Dropout Rates

This is an excerpt from the paper...

Although attendance levels at American colleges and universities are near all time highs in 1990, the dropout rate is also near an all time high. Many factors have been implicated in the student dropout rate; however, prominently mentioned among these factors are the levels of satisfaction and dissatsfaction among students, with respect to their position as students.

The National Organization of Business, whose members have a vital stake in the academic success of today's college and university students, are interested in assessing the levels of student satisfaction and dissatisfaction. To this end, the organization has commissioned an effort to measure the levels of student satisfaction and dissatisfaction through the application of an instrument designed to measure job satisfaction and dissatisfaction levels among workers in organizations.

The results indicated that none of the students included in the sample were clearly dissatisfied with their role as a student. This finding appears to defy reality. Thus, it wasconcluded that the use of a job satisfaction measuring instrument is not entirely suitable for use in measuring levels of student satisfaction and dissatisfaction. It is, therefore, recommended that additional research be performed in an effort to establish an effective measuring instrument for levels of student satisfaction and dissatisfaction.

Burnout Burnout is a relatively common phenomenon in many fields of endeavor. Burnout, together with the actions of personnel before this point is reached, lead to high rates of personnel turnover, decreased levels of productivity, and declining quality levels in duty performance. These factors cause severe managerial problems for organizations, and significant disruptions in the lives of the individuals involved. Burnout is sometimes a manifestation of low levels of job satisfaction. At other times, individuals experiencing burnout are difficult to satisfy, as a consequence of psychological state, as opposed to jobrelated circumstances. Thus, burnout may or may not be involved in the job satisfaction perceptions of individuals. Locus of Control The pioneering work on locus of control was performed J. B Rotter (1966).
