Community Participation in PTAs

This is an excerpt from the paper...

INCREASING COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION IN PARENTTEACHER ASSOCIATIONS THROUGH THE APPLICATION OF BUSINESS CONCEPTS

It is proposed that a research study be conducted, the purpose of which would be to explore the potential for increasing community participation in parentteacher associations (PTAs) through the application of business concepts. The elements of the proposal for research presented herein include (1) an introduction to the topic, (2) a statement of scope, (3) an issue statement, (4) an objective statement, (5) a description of the decision criteria, (6) a description of the research methodology, (7) and explanation of data collection procedures, and (8) a plan for the review of relevant literature.

As a professional teacher, the researcher of the proposed study is directly affected by the effectiveness of community involvement with schools. Effective community involvement with individual schools is best achieved through an active and well attended PTA organization (Walker, 1990). These reasons led to the selection of the proposed research topic by the researcher.

Increasing community involvement in the public education process will likely lead to both increased public support for public education and to improvements in educational performance. C

Description of Methodology The research design for the proposed study envisions the development of a threefaceted model to be applied in an effort to increase parental participation in the district's PTA organizations. The first facet of this model will be the targeting of specific groups of parents that are most likely to respond favorably to PTA participation. The second facet of the model will involve an educational effort to persuade the targeted parents of the desirability of their participation in the district's PTA organizations. The third facet of the model will be the development of the target parents to be effective PTA participants. At each level of the model development, alternative strategies will be evaluated for effectiveness through a process of hypothesis testing. Data collected through the administration of survey instruments will provide the basis for hypothesis testing employing chi square analysis. The rejection criterion for the null will be p<.05. Data Collection Data will be collected through the administration of survey instrumen
