SELECTED DEMOGRAPHIC AND MARKETING DATA ON THE ELDERLY SEGMENT OF THE AMERICAN POPULATION
This research develops selected demographic and marketing information on the elderly population in the United States. For purposes of this research, elderly is defined as age 50 and older; however, the principal focus, where possible, is on the 6574 year old age group.
With respect to income levels of the elderly, the areas of interest are (1) household income, and (2) individual disposable income. Data pertaining to these factors are presented in the discussions which follow.
Household income data for those persons aged 50 and older are presented in Table 1 (income distribution), which may be found on the following page, and Table 2 (average household income), which may also be found the following page. As the data presented in Table 1 indicate, the proportion of elderly persons in lowerincome households increases, as age increases. The data presented in Table 2 indicate that the steepest household income decline occurs in the move from the 5064 age group to the 6574 age group, but that another significant decline also occurs in the move from the 6574 age group to the 75 and older age group.
Disposable income data for individuals in the 6274 age group are presented in Table 3, which may be found on page 3. The 6274 age group is reported in lieu of the 6574 age group, Table 1
