Drawbacks to Taking Viagra

This is an excerpt from the paper...

This study will argue that the anti-impotence prescription drug Viagra may not provide an effective solution for improving relationships. The study will consider drawbacks to the taking of Viagra including consideration of non-sexual aspects of the issue. The main focus of the study will be the argument that the quick fix of Viagra may bring more sexual activity to a relationship, but it would be naive and short-sighted to believe that adding an erect penis to an unfulfilled relationship will solve all the complex problems in a troubled relationship. Viagra will likely help the sexual aspect of a relationship if the couple's sexual dissatisfaction is rooted in the man's inability to produce and maintain an erection, but to expect that pill (or any pill or drug) to save a relationship by itself is a romantic (or pharmaceutical) fantasy.

Viagra (the Pfizer brand name of the drug sildenafil citrate) was approved by the Food and Drug Administration on March, 1998, and since that time millions of men have used the drug. What makes the drug particularly appealing, aside from its effectiveness, is the fact that it is a pill which is ingested an hour before sex. Viagra works simply by essentially allowing blood to flow into the penis in men who suffer from inadequate blood flow, and it accomplishes this effectiveness with great dependability. It improves erections in four out of every five men who take it, no matter how long they have suffered from erectile dysfunction, regardless o

Obviously if any single one of the factors above, or a combination thereof, is the cause of the man's impotence, changing those factors would be a far better solution to the problem than taking a pill. In addition, if these other factors are present, it is likely that they are affecting the relationship in ways other than merely in the area if sexuality. In other words, problems which affect the health (psychological, physical or emotional) of an individual (and which therefore affect his sexual functioning) will negatively affect not only that individual's life but the life of his partner and their relationship. In such cases, a pill may be a quick fix for the man's inability to achieve an erection, and it may improve the physical aspect of the couple's sexual life together, but it will not treat those problems beyond the sexual category. In fact, it will likely make those problems worse because they will not be dealt with, but will be temporarily masked instead by the couple's focus on their reinvigorated sex life. Another problem in a troubled relationship which will not be improved by Viagra, and wh
