Health of Older Persons

This is an excerpt from the paper...

This research assesses the quantitative analyses included in four journal articles dealing with the health of older persons, wherein nutrition is one facet of the functional health of older persons. Each article is assessed separately, and no comparison is made between articles.

DETERMINANTS OF FUNCTIONAL HEALTHOF OLDER PERSONS

This study investigated relationships among demographics, self esteem, health locus of control, health promotion behaviors, perceived health, and functional health ratings in 179 older men and women in the 6599 year old age group (Duffy and MacDonald, 1990).

Only those tables and charts dealing with the quantitative analyses performed are considered in this assessment. Table 1 presented the demographic characteristics of the research sample in terms of frequencies and percentages. These data were presented for four specific variablesgender, marital status, race, and education. Using martial status for purposes of illustration, the reported frequency of 15 in the "never married" category indicated that 15 members of 179 member sample had never been married. The reported percentage of 8.4 percent for this subgroup meant that 8.4 percent, or approximately onetwelfth, of the total sample had never been married. With respect to marital status, the largest subgroup was "widowed," for which the reported frequency was 87 and the reported percent was 48.6. These data indicated that 87 members of the

These 11 individuals represented 37 percent of the subgroup, and, for this sample subgroup, health was reported to be of equal importance with family as a the primary source of life dissatisfaction. By contrast, among the members of the 4050 year old subgroup, with respect to health the frequency was only one, with a percent of 3.0, and health ranked at the bottom of the list as one of the primary causes of life dissatisfaction. Table 3 presented data reflecting the aspirations of the members of the research sample with respect to the same six variables included in tables 1 and 2. The data were reported in table 3 in the same manner as that reported in tables 1 and 2frequency, percent, and rank. Again, using health for purposes of illustration, the frequency of 23 reported for the 6575 age group indicated that 23 of the 30 members of this subgroup, 77.0 percent, aspired to good health to a greater extent that they did to psychological wellbeing, material wellbeing, family, work, or activities and options. Health, of course, ranked first among the six factors with this sample subgroup. By contrast, among the 4050 year old subgroup, the health frequency was only 12 (40 percent) , and it had a lower frequen
