Oren's Self-Care Nursing Model

This research examines Dorothea Orem's conceptual framework of nursing, which is most often referred to as the selfcare nursing model (Fawcett). This examination is presented in two major discussions, the first of which traces the development of and describes the model, while the second analyzes and evaluates the model.

DEVELOPMENT AND DESCRIPTION OF OREM'SSELFCARE NURSING MODEL

The initial discussion in this section traces the evolution of Orem's conceptual framework of nursing. The Orem model is then described in the second discussion.

As nursing consultant to the Division of Hospital and Institutional Services of the Indiana State Board of Health (1949to1957), Orem was exposed to the broad range of nursing activities and responsibilities (Fawcett). This exposure provided her with the experiences and observations which, in turn, led to the development of the initial ideas which were eventually synthesized into the selfcare nursing model (Fawcett).

As early as 1956, Orem held that: (1) nurses provide specialized assistance to individuals; (2) the individuals to whom such assistance is given are limited in their capacity to provide selfcare, and in their ability to intelligently participate in their care; and (3) nurses provide care through varying processes, which include doing things for persons under care, helping individuals under care to do things for themselves, and teaching others (usually family) to assist pe
