Results of a Research Study

The results of the research performed for this study are presented in this chapter. Hypothesis testing was performed twice. The first set of test were based on the data pertaining to the full sample of 150 subjects. The second set of tests were based on data pertaining to the reduced sample of 41 matched pairs of modern and traditional subjects.

The results based on the full sample of 150 subjects are presented in three contexts. First, the sample is described within the context of 13 demographic characteristics. Second, distribution of the subjects and subject means according to measured variablesrole attitudes, locus of control, perceived depression, and perceived stress is discussed. Third, the results of the testing of the research hypotheses are presented.

Demographic Description of the Research Sample

The full research sample is described in this section within the context of 13 demographic characteristics. These characteristics are (1) age, (2) marital status, (3) employment status, (4) occupation, (5) income, (6) education level, (7) college major, (8) area of residence, (9) country of birth, (10) area of early childhood, (11) subject's birth order, (12) whether subject is first from family to attend college, and (13) number of subject's sisters to attend college.

Descriptive data on the full sample according to age are presented in Table 1 (see Appendix). As the data presented in Table 1 indicate, the total sample was relatively young, with frequency decreasing as age increases. When the sample is considered according to modern and traditional orientations, the total sample pattern characterizes the modern orientation group. The traditional orientation group, however, is characterized by both older ages than the total sample, as well as a different distribution pattern (see Table 1).

Descriptive data relative to marital status for the full sample are presented in Table 2 (see Appendix). As the data ...
