PLACE, FUNCTION, USEFULNESS AND PURPOSE OF LITERATUREIn the scientific literature, the literature review consists of a summary and critique of the writings and research of recognized authorities in the area of interest (Kiess & Bloomquist, 1985). Of the literature review, Best (1981) has stated that it has several useful purposes and functions. First, when presented within the context of an experiment, the review provides the reader with evidence that he or she is familiar with the existing knowledge base. Moreover, it serves as a foundation for elucidating what is still unknown and untested regarding the existing knowledge base. Best (1981) points out that the power of the review of literature to separate what is known and unknown in the area of interest is crucial to conducting sound research. As he puts it: Since effective research is based upon past knowledge, this step helps to eliminate the duplication of what has been done, and provides useful hypotheses and helpful suggestions for significant investigation. (p.41) In addition to the foregoing, the literature review can often supply context to a given study by providing the theoretical and historical background and framework. The provision of said contest assists the reader to better understand the significance of the study. Perhaps the place of the literature review in scientific work is best stated by Borg and Gall (1977) who note that the literature review serves as a fou

Due to time and financial constraints on the investigator, it is not possible to review the literature in each of the delineated categories, many of which contain hundreds of studies just within themselves. Therefore, the presented review will be narrowed down to only the research examining relationships between depression and chronic illness as it manifests itself with respect to specific kinds of chronic illness, e.g. cardiovascular conditions, epilepsy, etc.).
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The proposed study's review of the existing research on depression and chronic illness as it relates to specific kinds of chronic illness has the purpose of determining if the observed relationship differs from chronic illness to chronic illness. A subsidiary purpose is to investigate the methodological soundness of the research. Based on these purposes, the nature of the chronic illness/depression relationship, as it manifests itself across different types of chronic illnesses, will be described. Further, conclusions about the general validity of the existing work in the area will b
