SOY FOR MENOPAUSE & OSTEOPOROSIS Purpose

This is an excerpt from the paper...

SOY BENEFITS FOR MENOPAUSE & OSTEOPOROSIS

The purpose of this research is to investigate the benefits of soy for menopause and osteoporosis. The technical component for this study is a questionnaire developed by the researcher as a survey instrument to assist in the determining of benefits of soy. Studies have shown the possible potential for soy as a supplement providing relief for menopause symptoms as well as bone loss in osteoporosis; further research is needed to confirm these findings. This project will provide additional support regarding soy benefits.

This review of the literature will provide information regarding areas of relevance to the research topic, to include the benefits of soy for menopause and the benefits of soy for osteoporosis.

Benefits of Soy For Menopause. Kurzer reports that the consumption of soy has been found to result in small hormonal effects for pre and postmenopausal women. The author concludes that further research is necessary to demonstrate the magnitude of these effects and determine what constituents are involved (660S). Newman further reports that focus at a menopause meeting of the North American Menopause Society, was changed from conventional hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to non-pharmacologic interventions, with a particular emphasis on soy phytoestrogens. It was noted that data regarding hot flashes is scant, and preliminary data regarding the isoflavones in soy, shows the promotion of bone

nic potential of phyto-oestrogens; increased soy intake was related to an increase in numbers of hyperplastic epithelial cells in breast fluid (1762). Benefits of Soy For Osteoporosis. Goldman reports on the beneficial effects of phytoestrogens, particularly isoflavones, regarding bone mineral density (BMD). Not only are phytoestrogens good for the bone, it has been found that those women who are postmenopausal need not take an abundance of soy to effect this benefit; 60 to 70 mg of isoflavones per day, was found to result in significant drops in bone resorption markers (three glasses of soy milk, a handful of roasted soy nuts three times daily). A rise in serum osteocalcin, which is a marker of bone formation, was also found to increase, simultaneously (1). A study of 267 Japanese-American women, taking high and low levels of isoflavone, was conducted. All participants were over the age of 65 and were surveyed regarding lifetime and current intake of soy. The soy intake for these subjects typically came from Japanese foods such as natto (fermented soybean), miso (soy paste), aburaage (fried soy pouches), and tofu. Those with higher lifetime soy intakes demonstrated 8% higher femoral neck BMDs (7% higher for lumbar spine
