Stress-inducing Factors for Nurses

This is an excerpt from the paper...

One of the important areas of stress-inducing factors for nurses involves personal or self concerns (Humphrey, 1988, pp. 45-46). These include self concerns associated with the meeting of personal goals: some nurses may believe that they will not reach their goals in their chosen profession, and that their talents could be put to better use in some other career pursuit. Self concerns which involve self-esteem involve the way a nurse feels about herself, and often self-esteem can be highly related to the fulfillment of certain ego needs. Many nurses com[plain that they are rarely complemented for a job well done, but that they are frequently criticized for things beyond their control. Self concerns relating to changing values encompass the feelings that nurses may have regarding a value system imposed upon them in a given situation which is different from their personal value system. Self concerns that center around social needs relate to nursing requirements, such as changing shifts, that tend to infringe upon the social life that many nurses feel they deserve. And finally, self concerns involving personal competence and ability are the ones that frustrate nurses the most. Many nurses express fear that they will make an error in judgment to the detriment of a patient's health, and this may certainly undermine their confidence and morale.

Humphrey (1988, pp.47-52) conducted a survey among nurses trying to determine those factors which induced the most stress. In desc

Attitude changes deal with creating a positive set of attitudes toward self, others and things that will bring about required results. Rogers (1961, pp. 34-35) contends that developing a posture of "unconditional positive regard" toward self and others provides an opening in a person through which positive and enhancing data can be communicated in both directions--outward to others and inward from others (p. 34). Diet control and observing personal health practices provide direct influence over many bodily functions associated with stress. Because of their training and experience, nurses should find this principle easy to accept, but sometimes it is a difficult one to accomplish. Nursing, with its imposing workload, may cause nurses to neglect the basic requirements that are essential to reach an adequate functional level. Physical activities aid in stress reduction. Regular exercise develops new and greater capacities in several areas of function, and can have the effect of expressing stress from the person into the activit
