TROUBLING ASPECTS OF ADOLESCENCE

This is an excerpt from the paper...

This research identifies and discusses five aspects of adolescence that are of great concern to most parents. Additionally, this research considers strategies that might ameliorate the problems associated with these five aspects of adolescence.

Five Troubling Aspects of Adolescence

The five aspects of adolescence considered in this research are (1) disaffection from society, (2) suicide, (3) alcohol and drug use, (4) prostitution, and (5) social behavior that may lead to pregnancy and AIDS (acquired immunity deficiency syndrome) infection. Often, two or more of these aspects of adolescence are present in the same individual, and there exist strong interrelationships among these behavioral aspects of adolescence.

A variety of reasons underlie the disaffection of young people from their society and their families. One of these factors is abuseboth physical and psychologicalperpetrated by someone in a position of trust or authority in the life of a young person (Howing, 1990, pp. 24449). One of the most debilitating outcomes of abuse experienced by a young person is a loss of selfesteem (Ogata, 1990, pp. 10081013). Abuse, and the hopelessness and depression that often stems from abuse, frequently leads to a loss of selfesteem (Madonna, 1991, pp. 4649). The loss of selfesteem leads many adolescents to consider suicide (Sanders and Giolas, 1991, pp. 5054).

The mean consumption of alcohol per occasion, however, is lower for upper level students than for first and second year students. There are four general groups of theories explaining the development of alcohol abuse behavior(1) learning theories holding that persons learn to use alcohol as a means of coping, and that the use eventually becomes addictive, (2) physiological theoriesholding variously that nutritional deficiencies and genetics lead to alcoholism, (3) psychoanalytic theories holding variously that childhood experiences, selfdestructive drives, feelings of inferiority and insecurity, and locus of control orientations lead to alcoholism, and (4) sociological theoriesholding that societal conditions lead some individuals into alcoholism (Jenkins, 1990, pp. 331336). All of these theories have some degree of validity. Some of the theories apply to some individuals in some circumstances, while they do not apply to other individuals or even to the same individuals in other circumstances (Pardeck, 1991, pp. 341347). Further, a multiplicity of causes is required to explain the development of alcoholism by some individuals (En
