Battuta

This is an excerpt from the paper...

Abu ‘Abdullah ibn Battuta, more readily known to scholars and historians as Ibn Battuta, was an Arab who lived during the fourteenth century. His lineage represented a line of Muslim legal scholars and he was schooled in law and gained employment periodically throughout his life as a judge. However, the significance of his life did not result from his duties as judge, but from his extensive travels throughout the Muslim world of the medieval period, travels that often see him labeled as the Muslim Marco Polo. Born and raised in Tangiers, Morocco, his adventures and travels would extend a span of three decades and see him travel through more than 40 countries, including India, China, Asia and Africa. A cosmopolitan and erudite individual, Battuta’s travels reveal much about the international scope of Islamic civilization during the medieval period. He was crafty even in the face of death and did not reveal to the Hindus that he was an officer of Delhi. For some unexplained (by Dunn or historical record) reason, Battuta’s captors seem to have lost their resolve to murder the pious traveler, and he was set free. His departure did not bode well for his safety since he was surrounded by many hostile to representatives of Muhammad Tughluq. Eventually, Battuta would find respite and hospitality after a fugitive had carried the exhausted traveler on his back while Ibn recited passages from the Koran. However, before meeting this fugitive the experience he encountered after nearly escaping death at the hands of the Hindus shows the resilient and remarkable ability of the man to survive, “he wandered about the countryside for six days, avoiding villages, sleeping under trees or in abandoned houses, and subsisting on well water and herbs.
