The New Israelis
This is an excerpt from the paper...
In The New Israelis, Yossi Melman examines Israel’s psyche through historical perspective and first-person anecdotes. Israel is undergoing serious challenges and changes, a period of confusion and vulnerability as it struggles with its dualistic perspective of modern secularism and historical religious tendencies. At the same time, many hallmarks of Israeli society are crumbling, such as the kibbitz movement. Socialism is being supplanted by capitalism and the global free market economy similar to many traditional world cultures. Palestine continues to be a challenge and traditional social patterns are being dissolved by an awareness that Israel history and Israel mythology are not in synch. In the book, Yossi Melman takes a sympathetic and critical view of the many conflicts and paradoxes of modern Israeli life. This analysis will focus on two criticisms he renders and two situations with which he is sympathetic.Melman writes about the modern Israel sympathetically, but he is critical when it comes to his perspective
