Workplace Violence

Recommendation for Security Managers

Government agencies, banks, shopping malls, restaurants, law firms, airlines, schools, and other organizations all share an increasingly more common social phenomenon. All of these types of workplaces and many others suffer from being the sites of workplace violence. Both employees in these workplaces and the general public who frequents them are placed at risk when workplace violence occurs.

Approximately 1400 people are killed on the job every year in the U.S. (Brenner and Summerfield 1996). Organizations are responsible for providing employees with a safe workplace free of violence. In depth pre-employment screening procedures, workplace violence awareness training, and workplace violence prevention strategies are proven methods of reducing violence in the workplace. However, few organizations have established a complete workplace violence security plan that involves these aspects. Anti-violence strategies must be in place for workers to feel free from fear and anxiety while on the job. Therefore, organizations that do not adopt such strategies leave themselves at risk for violence. Organizations with these strategies make themselves vulnerable to: lost productivity, violation of federal regulations, liability in light of state workers’ compensation statutes, tort claims, and jurisdictional interpretations of employment relationships.

Many organizations do not adopt workplace anti-violence plans.

Many employees are not provided with workplace violence training.

Many organizations do not have security measures in place to minimize workplace violence.
