Like all computer technology, these programs have evolved rapidly and continuously evolve as improvements are discovered and limitations eliminated. Part of the speed of evolution is from increased consumer demand for programs that help take care of their often monumental information management challenges.

Both Microsoft Corporation and Oracle Corporation make database management system software programs to help them meet the challenge. Microsoft’s Access97 for Windows 95 and Windows NT operating systems offers “relational database power to give you the information you need to make better decisions. It integrates data from spreadsheets and other databases, and is the easy way to find answers, share information over intranets and the Internet, and build faster business solutions” (Access97 5).

Oracle Corporation is the world’s largest provider of information management systems and the world’s second biggest software company behind only Microsoft. It offers Oracle Universal Server among its database programs and Oracle7. These kinds of programs allow for rapid sharing of information around the workplace or around the world. Oracle's products set the standard for information manageability.

Oracle is the top seller of relational database software in the world. It’s software designed for this purpose “commands 44 percent of the worldwide database market” (Oracle Corp. 1).
