Adam & Eve

The story of Adam and Eve is one of two creation myths in the bible. Adam is created by God who also creates Eve from one of Adam’s rib. They exist in the Garden of Eden, a virtual paradise where they have dominion over all the beasts, fish, herbs, and trees. However, God gives explicit orders that Adam must never eat from one tree, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If Adam eats from this particular tree, God tells him: “thou shalt surely die” (Genesis 2:17). As they are, Adam and Eve exist in a paradise of innocence and natural splendor. They are unaware of their naked condition.

One day a serpent enters the Garden of Eden. He beguiles Eve. He explains to her that God does not want her to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil because if she does, she, too, will gain the knowledge of the Gods and thus live forever. The serpent tells Eve, “Ye shall not surely die...your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil” (Genesis 3:4; 3:5). Eve finds the tree appealing to the eye, good for food, and she proceeds to eat of its fruit because she trusts the serpent’s lies.

The moment Eve eats from the tree, both she and Adam lose their innocence. Their naked condition is an embarrassment to them and they cover themselves. They soon hear the voice of God and hide away in some trees in the garden. When God asks them why they hid, Adam tells him because “I was naked and I hid myself” (Genesis 3:10). God becomes angry at Adam for eating of the forbidden tree at Eve’s behest. He punishes them in a variety of ways. Adam must now toil for his living and Eve will suffer the pain of childbirth. The snake is condemned to crawl on his belly and eat dirt. All three are banished from the Garden of Eden.
