He was a New Yorker who developed the vaccine for poliomyelitis. Many people shied away from his early theory. He thought that in order to prevent infection of the disease, you should have the virus injected into your system. By doing this your body will build up immunity to the disease. On April 12, 1955, Jonas Salk’s vaccine was finally approved and was released in the United States. I think Jonas Salk was very brave and a caring person. Despite the negativity that he was bombarded with, he was able to develop something that would save many lives. His controversial theories have been instrumental in today’s search for finding a cure for AIDS.He was born July 18, 1921, in Cambridge, Ohio. Glenn was a Marine fighter pilot in World War II and the Korean War. His excellent fighting and flying skills allowed him to become promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1960. John Glenn later became an astronaut in 1961. One year later he became a part of history. On February 20, 1962, the space capsule Friendship 7 was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida on an expedition into space. Glenn was part of the crew and their mission was to orbit the earth. They completed their mission three times over. Not only did the space crew circumnavigate the earth but it did so three times. When the ship returned from orbit, John Glenn was recognized as the first American to ever travel around the globe in space. Thirty-six years later, at the age of 7
