Augusta Georgia

This is an excerpt from the paper...

The hub of the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA) is my hometown, Augusta, Georgia, a region blessed both in terms of history and nature. Augusta’s history is rich in Indian heritage, pioneer heritage, and Revolutionary and Civil War heritage “In 1845, the year the canal was begun, Augusta had a population of 7,502 whites, 3,984 free persons of color, and 440 slaves (Augusta, Georgia 1). Today, the Augusta population is much greater and the social stratification dramatically altered. For years, the Augusta social stratification was the result of a “good old boy” network of white, primarily wealthy males with family lineage reaching far into Augusta’s past. However, Augusta is the second largest metropolitan area of Georgia today and is no more considered a little southern hamlet as it once was. The Mayor of Augusta is Bob Young. In his State of the City Address, Young outlined the need for a “new day” in Augusta, a new day that would promote more unity among the different social classes while eradicating the business-as-usual practices of the “good old boy” network. As the Mayor stated in his address “When I took office a year ago, I declared it was a ‘new day.’ I said that because I don’t buy into the ‘good old boy’ mentality that protects the status quo. … I saw a great need to heal the rifts that divide us…our differences in color, where we live, what sex we are. It was summed up in the catchphrase ‘Unity in

There are myriad shops and restaurants, parks, recreational facilities and natural wonders in Augusta, including the a Spring that is unmatched in beauty by many metropolitan areas “History and Mother Nature have both blessed Augusta. Long known as the South’s ‘Garden City,’ Augusta bursts into spectacular bloom each spring to welcome the greatest names in golf at the famed Masters Tournament” (Introduction 1). Fishing, boating, tennis and a variety of other activities were enjoyed by my family and me while I was growing up. Riverwalk, Augusta allows for foot access along the Savannah, and is typically the host of many activities that are scheduled to take place there during the year. The urban development in Augusta over the past twenty years has included an effort to redevelop areas that have fallen victim to poverty and crime. One of these is the Broad Street district. When I was young my mother would not let me go to this area to shop or hang out with my friends because it was considered a bad neighborh
