There have been industrial tycoons who have significantly altered the landscape of American culture and society, men like John D. Rockefeller, J.P. Morgan, and Andrew Carnegie. These powerful “Robber Barons” during America’s Gilded Age, who often amassed fortunes on the backs of workers while radically transforming economics, society, and politics, exhibited enormous influence on American culture and society. From the formation of labor unions to the rise of America as the greatest industrial power in the world, many social and cultural phenomena can be traced to the influence of these men. Another business titan, William (“Bill”) Gates, III., who amassed a fortune in America’s transformation from the Industrial Age to the Age of Information, has eclipsed the influence on American culture and society exhibited by the Robber Barons. Only one man has directed a company to publicly traded worth of about half-a-trillion dollars. At 44, he may be the richest man in history, worth approximately $77 billion. He’s also created more millionaires than anyone in the history of business. As Schofield argues, “The global influence of people like Bill Gates and Intel’s Andy Grove reflects the fact that their companies own one of the piece parts on which most other suppliers depend” (72).
