This is an excerpt from the paper...
Leland, L. (March 1, 1999). Management: Fire ‘em up—motivating employees. American Printer. 1-6.This author argues that even though words like “team-building”, “empowerment”, and “synergy” are bandied about in the corporate environment, “some managers still just don’t get it” (Leland, 1999, 1). What they don’t get is figuring out how to motivate employees which the author argues does not mean merely giving them cash incentives. Instead he argues people want to be respected, treated fairly, and recognized for their contributions to the workplace. Short-term tricks are often ineffective and the author argues following the Golden Rule is much more valuable than money in motivating employees to work more effectively in the long-term “While managing people effectively requires significantly more time and effort, the payback in productivity and, thus, profitability, is invaluable” (Leland, 1999, 1). The author offers ten tips which he believes will motivate employees to higher levels of excellence in their work.
