Computer Crimonology

New York State (NYS) enacted Penal Law (PL) statutes relating to computer crime in 1986, because of rising public outcry concerning increased computer crime. The larceny section of the NYS PL originally covered computer crime. The larceny articles proved inadequate as technology rapidly evolved. With this new legislation written, law enforcement agencies could now mount cases against criminals that use computers in the commission of a crime. This research will provide a brief history on the evolution of computer crime along with an explanation of related terms. Most importantly, this research will examine the need for a dedicated computer crime unit in Suffolk County.
