Computer System Implementation
This is an excerpt from the paper...
The following research is designed to demonstrate the challenges experienced by those responsible for implementing a computer system (technology) in the business environment. An introduction details the changing nature of business in regard to increased competition and the need to increase efficiencies and cut costs to gain competitive advantage. Technology often serves this function for those businesses that implement technology successfully. A review of the literature addresses the most common hurdles experienced when implementing technology systems into the business environment, primarily those of a people and those of an organizational nature. Issues that have a great impact on the success or failure of computer system implementation are then addressed, with a focus on the most significant ones like management and employee attitudes toward technology, organizational culture, and information technology (IT) risk management. Technology trends continue to impact the implementation process, as new technologies are developed and old ones made obsolete. This section focuses on the most significant trends that will impact implementation over the next three years, like broadband technologies and wireless electronic communications. Finally, recommendations are made in light of the issues that most impact successful computer system implementation in the business environment, via a model technology life-cycle strategic

ce of new technologies has been explored extensively in the literature. Underlying this research is a similar finding. It is not technology implementation or new technologies that cause negative attitudes in employees and management with respect to implementation; rather it is the age-old element of change. Adapting to change is difficult and the new nature of many technologies complicates this challenge for many. As Livingstone (et al, 2002) note, “Although a general attitude, attitude toward change is of interest in regard to technological change because of the relationship it has with an individual’s ability to adapt to change situations, regardless of the type of change” (80).
Indeed, many studies in the literature support the contention that one of the most difficult obstacles to successful technology implementation is user attitudes and perceptions toward technological change. From education to healthcare, employees recognize the importance of integrating technology into their jobs. However, from education to healthcare employees exhibit a great deal of mistrust, skepticism and avoidance with respect to embracing the use of technology. According to Ertmer (et al, 1999), “Teachers recognize the importance of integrati
