The computer monitor has undergone many technological advances in its relatively short life. Nonetheless, there are basic characteristics by which users not only select a monitor but also understand its technology. These characteristics generally include; resolution, dot pitch, refresh rate, size, energy efficiency, and, MPR II. Before examining each of these characteristics, it is useful to have a general understanding of how the monitor, one of the most significant components of any computer system, works. In modern computer systems, the graphics card and the computer receive instructions entered by the user that informs them what is desired to be seen on the monitor. After the monitor receives this information, it portrays the image requested through an electron gun that acts almost like a paint sprayer, “The electron gun, which scans back and forth very rapidly, causes phospors on the inside of the screen to glow. On a color monitor, these phospors are red, green and blue, which can be mixed to create other colors. The phospors glow very briefly before fading, so the electron gun has to repaint (refresh) many times each second” (James 7). This is why the refresh rate is a significant characteristic of in the selection of a monitor. If it is too slow the picture will appear to flicker on the screen because the electrons are not fired rapidly enough to replace the fading image on the screen

Size is also related to resolution. The larger the screen the higher the resolution capability. At the highest resolution, screen size is very significant. Further, when size is being considered, one must remember that the monitor size advertised is often not the viewing image size on the actual glass screen. For example, the monitor size is usually measured diagonally from one corner of the screen to another. However, this screen measurement is often lower than the size of the advertised monitor. For instance, 15-inch monitors typically only have a screen size that is 13.4 to 14.2 inches. Computer monitors range in size from 9 to 39 inches, but the ones that have sold the most during the past decade have been in the 14 to 17 inch range. High cost and a lack of sophisticated technology were obstacles to selling larger monitors until recently because of new technologies and a significant reduction in price for computer hardware across the spectrum.
Energy efficiency is important because if the monitor has energy efficient technology it will lower energy consumption. Thus, it is wise to purchase only those monitors which carry the “Energy Star” guidelines advised by the Environmenta
