Correctional Officer Training

This is an excerpt from the paper...

The recent high number of incidents of correctional officer brutality against inmates underscores the importance of correctional officer training. However, in light of overcrowded prisons, inadequate budgets, and a lack of qualified correctional officers, many prisons have been cutting back on training or eliminating it altogether. In the face of inhumane and brutal treatment of many inmates, prisons need to increase training programs with a focus on the inherent worth of inmates despite their past crimes and incarcerated condition.

The need for more training for correctional officers has been a focus in the media of late because of the high number of violent acts perpetrated by guards against inmates. From the rape of female inmates by male guards to the death of inmates who allegedly provoked incidents with guards, correctional officers have been indicted and convicted of many types of abuse in recent years. After the murder of an inmate by a corrections officer, authorities began a review of personnel files and found mixed histories among the guards who had been suspended due to an inmate’s death “The highest-ranking corrections officer suspended following the death of a condemned murdered had a history of using force against those he guarded…a 14-year veteran of the state prison system has been involved in 50 struggles with inmates dating back to 1985” (Pellemans and Wasson 1).

However, the death of inmates, guards and riots have plagued the prisons in their system, in addition to sex scandals and allegations of violent and abusive treatment by guards to juveniles. A U.S. Department of Justice officials found that most of the problems resulted from a lack of judgement by prison officials when it came to budget cuts “A federal judge said the company has stinted on training for its guards and on food, clothing, education and medical treatment for inmates. The profit motive leads companies to cut corner on guard pay and training that lead to problems” (Pounds 1-2). Other prisons have taken similar steps to cut training which has led to more abuse by guards and more violent incidences within prison walls. At Florida State Prison, 11 guards were suspended following the death of an inmate. While Unions and the head of the state’s training commission oppose any efforts to cut t
